Wilsons Wild Animal Park

Petting Zoo Fun

A couple weeks ago Sydney and I had a whole Saturday ahead of us with no plans and nothing to do. Since she had such a great time at the Zoo when we went this summer I thought maybe she would also enjoy a petting zoo so we headed to Wilsons Wild Animal Park.

Feeding animals

Feeding animals

Sydney was not particularly interested in feeding the animals with her hands like I did but she was plenty happy to give them access to the bag of food so it was probably a good thing we got two bags of food.

There are so many animals at this park from zebras, to alpacas, to deer, and emu, and sheep and goats and birds and chickens and so many different animals to see and feed. The animals were really friendly and so excited for all the food. We got there pretty early which made it a really nice trip since we weren’t fighting a lot of people to get access to the animals. Not that it ended up being super crowded before we left, but there did end up being quite a bit of people by the time we left.

I couldn’t resist this guy. He was so friendly that I couldn’t resist taking a selfie with him. It took a few tries but we finally got it and I’m pretty glad he didn’t try to like eat my hair or anything.

She really had a blast and I loved every second of her excitement over all the animals. We had such a great day and Sydney is at such a fun age that these little adventures of ours are definitely something I greatly look forward to.

County Fair.

What’s a summer without a fair? Not a good one, that’s what. I love going to the fair – the sights, the sounds, the rides, the games, the food. It’s always a good time. We went last year and there was no way I was missing this year. We’ve gone every year since we’ve lived out here and I don’t see that changing either. Plus, I’ve created a tradition with this picture and obviously it would be sad to stop.

Fair. 3 years running.

This year was all about the rides for Sydney. I wasn’t sure she would be big enough to ride them, but after spending time in Ocean City for Memorial Day weekend when she could ride rides by herself I suspected she would be able to.

Rides are fun!

Rides are fun!

And I was right – she’s 36″ which is just as tall as she needs to be to go alone. So she went on like a dozen rides all by herself like she’s some sort of big girl or something crazy like that. And riding all these rides made her the happiest little girl ever. It was actually pretty difficult to pull her away from the rides. We managed to for a little bit, but we had to go back to ride a few more before we left. We even stayed WAY past her bed time because she was having so much fun I couldn’t pull her away. I mean. This face, right?

Before we got there she was really excited to see the animals and while she didn’t want to leave her beloved rides, she did for a little bit so we could see some of the animals. I think this chick was the cutest one there!

Cutest chick ever.

There are so many animals to see – farm animals mostly – and some of them are HUGE. I always forget how big cows are until I am standing within inches of them. We even saw a cow named Sydney. She wasn’t quite impressed by that because it wasn’t doing anything but laying around. She waved to a couple goats and said “hi goat” and she LOVED the pigs and we basically had to stop and see every pig we walked past.

I can see our trips to the fair being more and more fun for her as she gets older. I also see how I will probably have to spend more and more time there as she gets older because it’s going to be so hard to pull her away from those rides she loves. As long as she keeps taking pictures like this for me, I’ll let her spend as much time on the rides as she wants. Because if she is happy, I am happy.

Rt. 11 Crawl

It’s probably no secret that I love (love!) a good yard sale. I love a good deal in general. Especially when it comes to getting stuff for Sydney. Baby/kid stuff is expensive and in general they grow out of everything from clothes to toys so quickly it feels silly to pay full price for something. I rarely pay full price for anything, anyway, even for myself. Give me a good sale and I’m a happy girl!

YARD SALE!

YARD SALE!

Every year there is a HUGE yard sale event near me called the Rt. 11 Crawl. It is a glorious 42 miles of yard sales. I’ve gone the last couple years and this year was no different. The only difference this year was that I wasn’t really in the market for the big baby stuff or even new toddler toys. This year it was all about Sydney’s wardrobe. Fall is coming and she needs some new clothes. We both ended up doing pretty well this year. I ended up finding a couple items for me which was quite surprising, but also pretty exciting. She made out with a pretty good start to her fall/winter wardrobe. There are a couple consignment sales each season that I shop at so I’m pretty sure she’ll be all set as far as clothing goes pretty soon. And without breaking my poor wallet. Win-win.

yay clothes!

My parents and my uncle always set up a table at the yard sale so after we did our shopping we hung out there for a while. It’s a lot of in and out of the car so I wanted us to have plenty of time to stretch our legs. Sydney set herself up a little play area and went to town in the dirt. She played there for like a good hour or so. Every once in a while she would bring me some treasure she found from one of my parents boxes. We did not end up bringing home any of those treasures because, well, no.

Just playing.

Just playing.

After a long day of yard sale shopping, dirt playing, ice cream eating, and Nana & Grandpa spoiling time we ended our day relaxing on the couch. It isn’t often that she will just lay still like this but it is what she asked to do and I happily obliged her because I was beat and was happy to have some rest time of my own.

National Zoo.

National Zoo.

Recently Sydney and I woke up early one Sunday morning and we hit the road for the National Zoo and I was excited to check something fun off my Summer Bucket List. I was pretty impressed with my ability to navigate the Metro with a stroller and a curious toddler that doesn’t enjoy sitting still for anything. Also, I had no idea where the Zoo was when we got off the Metro in the city so I walked about 2 blocks past it and had to turn around and go back. The whole time Sydney was asking when we would be at the zoom. Eventually I figured out that I was on the wrong side of the street so that’s why I didn’t see the GIANT sign that said Zoo. It’s all good. We made it and it made for an adventure which is always fun.

She asked me to take her picture in front of this.

We got up pretty early that morning and that helped us beat a bit of the afternoon heat that day. I packed us a bag of snacks, some lunch, and plenty of water and made sure we were covered in sun screen (with some extra in my bag for later!) and we hit the road.

First Metro ride!

First Metro ride!

First stop in the day of first for Miss Sydney was a trip on the new Silver Line. The whole trip took about an hour and we had to change trains but it was fine – Sydney was well behaved and enjoyed herself and it isn’t like I would actually drive a car in to DC so it was basically the only way we were getting there.

She asked me to take her picture in front of this.

If you have never been to the National Zoo know this – it is huge. Miles and miles of walking to and from various animal habitats. It is also quite hilly… at first you don’t realize it, because you are going down hill, but then you decide your day is over and you go to the main exit to get back to the Metro and BAM! It’s a hill. And a pretty big one. So keep that in mind. It’s been so long since I’ve been to the Zoo that I completely forgot about that big hill.

Checking out the animals

Checking out the animals

I knew going in to this we’d cover a small portion of the Zoo. There is no way to reasonably do it in one day and on a day as hot as this I knew some of the animals probably would be hiding from the heat. We tried to visit most of the inside exhibits to give us a break from the heat and see a fair amount of animals.

Animals!

Animals!

We saw so many animals all day though that we definitely made the most of our visit. Sydney really enjoyed seeing the animals too – until I got her ice cream and then she cared only about the ice cream and zero about the animals.

Animal statue pictures!

Animal statue pictures!

These are some of my favorite pictures. For one, I am fairly certain I have some of me and these animals somewhere in my parents house… one day I’ll probably find them and maybe I’ll share them if I can remember. For two, she was SO excited to sit on that bear – she called it “nice bear” and kept petting it. When I asked her to stand with the panda she made faces which made me laugh. And by the time we got to the Eagle she was basically over my nonsense.

Overall, we had a really fun day! I’m so glad that we had the opportunity to go and that I took that opportunity!! I’m also excited to go back… but maybe in the fall when it isn’t quite as hot haha!

Three Day Weekends

Me and my girl

Me and my girl

Three day weekends are the very best. There’s just enough time to get stuff done, be busy, and also relax. There’s just enough time to really enjoy being at home with your family but not quite enough time for them to make you crazy. Three day weekends are my very favorite kind of weekend especially when I get to spend so much quality time with my girl.

Pool time.

Pool time.

This weekend we made the absolute most of all three of our days at home. We spent plenty of time playing at the pool. One morning we went and there was no one else there so we had the whole place to ourselves. It was amazing. Sydney is really enjoying all the time we’re able to spend at the pool and I’m enjoying spending so much time outside but also in the water so that it doesn’t feel so hot.

Rockin' Independence Eve

Rockin’ Independence Eve

Friday afternoon we headed to the downtown mall area near our house for their Rockin’ Independence Eve party. There was music and food and plenty of entertainment for the kiddies. Sydney had a blast just running around playing with her flags. We even indulged in some fried oreos because she was being so good (& who doesn’t love a good order of fried oreos!)

Fireworks!

Fireworks!

Once it started to get dark we made our way over to watch the fireworks display. We found a nice grassy spot to sit and we ended up being right next to where they were setting off the fireworks. I love watching fireworks. I always forget how much I enjoy them until I see them on the 4th and then I remember that they are beautiful and amazing.

Sydney was a little less than thrilled by the noise the fireworks made and she (so very sadly) kept asking for them to be all done. I was able to reassure her that it was just loud noise and once she believed me she seemed to enjoy watching them light up the sky. We didn’t make it out to any other fireworks display this weekend because of the weather, which was a little disappointing, but at the same time I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t have been too excited about the noise again.

You look like the 4th of July

Saturday we enjoyed a nice long nap together because we were preparing for staying up late for more fireworks… but we woke up to a huge storm and that pretty much put the kibosh on sitting in the grass to watch any fireworks that night. Oh well… we filled our time with a nice long walk and then we went to visit Uncle George at work and bring the lifeguards dinner.

Playing in the pool

Playing in the pool

Sydney really enjoyed another trip to the pool. I didn’t really plan for swimming this trip, but Sydney didn’t seem to mind that she was playing in her dress. Whatever makes you happy, kid. Whatever makes you happy.

My little daredevil.

My little daredevil.

Sunday we enjoyed a very relaxing day and another trip to the pool (of course!) in the afternoon. After a couple hours of pool time it looked like it might rain a bit so we headed home to rest a bit (because there are few naps around these parts lately…). After it decided it wasn’t actually going to storm we headed over to the park where Sydney showed off her daredevil side! I wasn’t quite as excited about this as she was, because she’s pretty clumsy, but she did a good job and her excitement was enough to calm my fears. I only let her do it once though because that was all my heart could take.

Weeee!!!

Weeee!!!

We ended our weekend happy, tired girls. I was pretty sad to head back to work yesterday because I really enjoyed spending so much time with her… but it was nice to be back in the office where no one was throwing fits (because two-and-a-half is a very hard age sometimes).

I hope you all enjoyed your weekend as much as we did!

Pool Days.

My brother is spending his summer lifeguarding at the local pool. He did this last year and I’m really excited he’s doing it again this year. Sydney is LOVING the pool this year and she’s extra excited to be able to spend time with Uncle George while we’re there.

I’m also pretty excited to have this be my summer view after  long day at the office and on the weekend.

Summer view.

We didn’t get to spend much time at the pool last summer and I kind of regretted it because Sydney did enjoy what little time we did spend in the pool. I think this year we will really have a lot of fun because George’s pool is geared for kids and the deepest part is only 3 1/2 feet and you can bring all kinds of toys and floating devices so Sydney can “swim” in her raft and play with toys and there’s so much shallow area that she can walk around without much fear. It’s pretty awesome.

Vacationing.

Ocean City.

Ocean City.

Over the Memorial Day weekend we headed out to my parents house on the Eastern Shore and I wish we had more opportunities to go there for long weekends… but you know, work and stuff so I try to just soak up the time we do get to spend up there.

Yay Rides!

Yay Rides!

We headed up to Ocean City one morning because it’s not too far from their house. Since we have always had this house up there I spent so much time there as a child and I was really excited about seeing her enjoy the boardwalk, the food, the ice cream, the rides, and all the people to watch.

Carousel

Carousel

Sydney had SO MUCH FUN riding the rides and she wanted to ride them over and over again. We rode the carousel twice because she was obsessed with the ponies. I wasn’t sure how she would do riding the rides but she actually rode them all by herself and I was really impressed with her. She’s getting to be such a big girl.

After we got back to the house we headed over to the little beach near my parents house to play for a little bit before we had dinner. Sydney has experienced the beach before but she was a bit annoyed by the sand on her shoe and then also by the fact that it was IN her shoe after we left the beach.

A little beach time.

We also spent one day wandering around the island of Chincoteague. We saw the ponies and had so much fun shopping and even stopped for some fresh, seafood lunch.

Some of my extended family was also up with us over the weekend and Sydney loves spending time with them. We had a really great time with them and Sydney obviously loves all the attention she gets from them. It’s also really cute to see them dote on her and spoil her rotten – not that she needs any more spoiling but it’s still awesome to see them love her so much.

Fishing off the backyard

Fishing off the backyard

We had my aunts, uncles, and cousins over for a BBQ one evening and we spent a significant amount of time fishing off the dock at my parents house. It is so awesome that they live right on the canal at the bay because Sydney really enjoyed fishing and so do I… which is great because Sydney was interested in holding the fishing pole for like a second and then she wanted someone else to hold it for a while until she remembered how much fun fishing is.

Fishing!

One morning I actually took advantage of the cooler temps, the beautiful view, and some free time to get a run in. I wish I could be running here all.the.time. because it was such a great run. I even managed to get my fastest time in AND almost get hit by a deer. That’s right. I ALMOST GOT HIT BY A DEER WHILE RUNNING. Because nature. It was mildly terrifying and also kind of awesome. Thankfully there were no other encounters with the animals.
