Apple Picking

Picking fruit on the farm

Picking fruit on the farm

I love so many things about the fall and living out in the country. One of my very favorite things is picking apples. I remember, as a little girl, getting loaded up in to the car and going apple picking out at this farm that isn’t actually a farm anymore but it does still exist as a store and winery. Since I can’t go there for apple picking anymore I have found other places to take Sydney. This year we headed out to Macintosh Fruit Farm to pick some apples and enjoy a nice day on the farm.

Sydney was so excited about this. I knew she wouldn’t be too much help, but she did pick a few before she just picked up an apple and started eating it. She loved running through the apple trees while I filled our bags full of apples. After we picked our fair share of apples we headed towards the back of the orchard and found some Asian Pears so we filled up a nice bag of those as well.

It was nice to fill up a couple bags of fruit, straight off the tree for us to take home. After we filled up our wagon we headed back towards the farm for some shopping in the store, some play time, and some lunch.

Sydney is currently obsessed with farm animals so it was awesome that they had a couple houses and a donkey for us to check out. She played on the playground and even played in the little sand pit they had. She was so happy playing that she didn’t even want to go eat lunch even though I knew she needed to eat. I eventually was able to pull her away and we enjoyed a yummy lunch and then picked up a few things in the store before we headed out. Overall it was a really great day and I think we’ll actually try to go back before the season is over. Now… what to do with about a bushel of fruit? Lots of cooking and baking for sure.

Weekending

Farmer's market flowers.

Farmer’s market flowers.

I love weekends when we have plenty to do but also enough time to wind down before we head off to the next adventure. This weekend was just one of those weekends. Friday night we headed out to Target but we stopped at McDonalds for some ice cream first because why not, right?

Agricultural Fair.

Agricultural Fair.

Saturday we headed downtown to check out the farmer’s market and there was also an Agricultural Festival downtown. Sydney is OBSESSED with Old McDonald Had A Farm and every.single.morning she wants me to sing it on the way to school AND we pass cows and horses that makes her morning (and afternoon). She was SO EXCITED to see all these farm animals set up at the mall downtown. We go down there pretty often so for her to see these guys down there her day was made.

Moooo!!

Moooo!!

One of the table gave her this cow face. She loves it. She spent quite a bit of time this weekend holding it up to her face going “moo” in the cutest, cutest voice possible. It is the best. She has such an awesome personality that I can’t get enough of her.

Apple Harvest Festival

Apple Harvest Festival

Sunday we headed over to the fair grounds for the Apple Harvest Festival. We live in apple country so there are a lot of apple related festivals around these parts (hello, Appleblossom.) This is a cute little craft festival with a children’s zone and an apple booth that shows all the different types of apples that can be grown (plus they give away a free bottle of juice and an apple – which was speaking Sydney’s language so we definitely go in there). The craft vendors are nice, but we didn’t buy much other than food (apple butter = yum!).

Play time

Play time

Sydney spent quite a bit of time in the kids zone jumping around on the blow up things. She loved this slide… until she got up there one time and did not want to come down it at all. So that was when we decided to find something else to do. She really did enjoy herself and it is so crazy to me that she is this little big kid. Where did my baby go? Before we headed out we got our face painted… even me. Because when your daughter says “you too mommy” you say yes and you get a pink heart on your cheek to match.

Twins.

Twins.

She is my favorite person in the whole world and I love spending time with her. She makes my weekends full of fun but we still make time for naps and relaxing which is how we rounded out our Sunday evening. And there you have it, another awesome weekend in the books.

Wilsons Wild Animal Park

Petting Zoo Fun

A couple weeks ago Sydney and I had a whole Saturday ahead of us with no plans and nothing to do. Since she had such a great time at the Zoo when we went this summer I thought maybe she would also enjoy a petting zoo so we headed to Wilsons Wild Animal Park.

Feeding animals

Feeding animals

Sydney was not particularly interested in feeding the animals with her hands like I did but she was plenty happy to give them access to the bag of food so it was probably a good thing we got two bags of food.

animals!

animals!

There are so many animals at this park from zebras, to alpacas, to deer, and emu, and sheep and goats and birds and chickens and so many different animals to see and feed. The animals were really friendly and so excited for all the food. We got there pretty early which made it a really nice trip since we weren’t fighting a lot of people to get access to the animals. Not that it ended up being super crowded before we left, but there did end up being quite a bit of people by the time we left.

I couldn’t resist this guy. He was so friendly that I couldn’t resist taking a selfie with him. It took a few tries but we finally got it and I’m pretty glad he didn’t try to like eat my hair or anything.

Me and my girl

Me and my girl

She really had a blast and I loved every second of her excitement over all the animals. We had such a great day and Sydney is at such a fun age that these little adventures of ours are definitely something I greatly look forward to.

Three Day Weekends

Me and my girl

Me and my girl

Three day weekends are the very best. There’s just enough time to get stuff done, be busy, and also relax. There’s just enough time to really enjoy being at home with your family but not quite enough time for them to make you crazy. Three day weekends are my very favorite kind of weekend especially when I get to spend so much quality time with my girl.

Pool time.

Pool time.

This weekend we made the absolute most of all three of our days at home. We spent plenty of time playing at the pool. One morning we went and there was no one else there so we had the whole place to ourselves. It was amazing. Sydney is really enjoying all the time we’re able to spend at the pool and I’m enjoying spending so much time outside but also in the water so that it doesn’t feel so hot.

Rockin' Independence Eve

Rockin’ Independence Eve

Friday afternoon we headed to the downtown mall area near our house for their Rockin’ Independence Eve party. There was music and food and plenty of entertainment for the kiddies. Sydney had a blast just running around playing with her flags. We even indulged in some fried oreos because she was being so good (& who doesn’t love a good order of fried oreos!)

Fireworks!

Fireworks!

Once it started to get dark we made our way over to watch the fireworks display. We found a nice grassy spot to sit and we ended up being right next to where they were setting off the fireworks. I love watching fireworks. I always forget how much I enjoy them until I see them on the 4th and then I remember that they are beautiful and amazing.

Sydney was a little less than thrilled by the noise the fireworks made and she (so very sadly) kept asking for them to be all done. I was able to reassure her that it was just loud noise and once she believed me she seemed to enjoy watching them light up the sky. We didn’t make it out to any other fireworks display this weekend because of the weather, which was a little disappointing, but at the same time I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t have been too excited about the noise again.

You look like the 4th of July

You look like the 4th of July

Saturday we enjoyed a nice long nap together because we were preparing for staying up late for more fireworks… but we woke up to a huge storm and that pretty much put the kibosh on sitting in the grass to watch any fireworks that night. Oh well… we filled our time with a nice long walk and then we went to visit Uncle George at work and bring the lifeguards dinner.

Playing in the pool

Playing in the pool

Sydney really enjoyed another trip to the pool. I didn’t really plan for swimming this trip, but Sydney didn’t seem to mind that she was playing in her dress. Whatever makes you happy, kid. Whatever makes you happy.

My little daredevil.

My little daredevil.

Sunday we enjoyed a very relaxing day and another trip to the pool (of course!) in the afternoon. After a couple hours of pool time it looked like it might rain a bit so we headed home to rest a bit (because there are few naps around these parts lately…). After it decided it wasn’t actually going to storm we headed over to the park where Sydney showed off her daredevil side! I wasn’t quite as excited about this as she was, because she’s pretty clumsy, but she did a good job and her excitement was enough to calm my fears. I only let her do it once though because that was all my heart could take.

Weeee!!!

Weeee!!!

We ended our weekend happy, tired girls. I was pretty sad to head back to work yesterday because I really enjoyed spending so much time with her… but it was nice to be back in the office where no one was throwing fits (because two-and-a-half is a very hard age sometimes).

I hope you all enjoyed your weekend as much as we did!

Udvar Hazy Air and Space Museum

Da Plane! Da Plane!

Da Plane! Da Plane!

Sydney and I had the opportunity to visit the Udvar Hazy Air and Space Museum near us. It was a nice little museum, but it definitely doesn’t compare to the one in DC. Sydney really enjoyed seeing all the planes because she loves watching them in the sky and both our parents live in the flight path for Dulles so she has a lot of opportunities to see planes fly overhead.

Space Shuttle Discovery

Space Shuttle Discovery

When I was pregnant the Space Shuttle Discovery flew in to down and has been housed at the Udvar Hazy museum so we got a chance to see it up close and personal. It almost doesn’t look real because it kind of looks like it’s made of puzzle pieces. It’s really cool to see in person though and Sydney was pretty fascinated by it.

Enola Gay

Enola Gay

In addition to seeing the Concord and a whole bunch of other awesome planes we also got to see the Enola Gay which is not just a famous plane it is a really cool looking plane. I love how museums bring history to life. That’s my inner nerd shining through.

Sydney loves planes

Sydney loves planes

Sydney was a bit hard to capture on film during our trip because there was so much to see and so many people to watch she was too busy to stand still for a second. This was one of the best pictures I got of her all day and I’m just glad I was able to snap one or two that she wasn’t moving too much in 😉

Overall, it was a good trip. I can’t say it was truly worth the $15 to park because we were only there for a little more than an hour but it was still something fun to do. I think if Sydney had been a little older she might have actually appreciated what she was seeing, but like I said she loves planes and she loved looking at all the planes so she was happy at least. If you’re looking for a quick afternoon trip but don’t want to head all the way in to the City this would be a fun place to take the kids to. They do have some guided tours and I saw a little activity set up, but it was just ending so I didn’t pay much attention to how often or what kind of activities they had on a regular basis.

Vacationing.

Ocean City.

Ocean City.

Over the Memorial Day weekend we headed out to my parents house on the Eastern Shore and I wish we had more opportunities to go there for long weekends… but you know, work and stuff so I try to just soak up the time we do get to spend up there.

Yay Rides!

Yay Rides!

We headed up to Ocean City one morning because it’s not too far from their house. Since we have always had this house up there I spent so much time there as a child and I was really excited about seeing her enjoy the boardwalk, the food, the ice cream, the rides, and all the people to watch.

Carousel

Carousel

Sydney had SO MUCH FUN riding the rides and she wanted to ride them over and over again. We rode the carousel twice because she was obsessed with the ponies. I wasn’t sure how she would do riding the rides but she actually rode them all by herself and I was really impressed with her. She’s getting to be such a big girl.

After we got back to the house we headed over to the little beach near my parents house to play for a little bit before we had dinner. Sydney has experienced the beach before but she was a bit annoyed by the sand on her shoe and then also by the fact that it was IN her shoe after we left the beach.

A little beach time.

A little beach time.

We also spent one day wandering around the island of Chincoteague. We saw the ponies and had so much fun shopping and even stopped for some fresh, seafood lunch.

Some of my extended family was also up with us over the weekend and Sydney loves spending time with them. We had a really great time with them and Sydney obviously loves all the attention she gets from them. It’s also really cute to see them dote on her and spoil her rotten – not that she needs any more spoiling but it’s still awesome to see them love her so much.

Fishing off the backyard

Fishing off the backyard

We had my aunts, uncles, and cousins over for a BBQ one evening and we spent a significant amount of time fishing off the dock at my parents house. It is so awesome that they live right on the canal at the bay because Sydney really enjoyed fishing and so do I… which is great because Sydney was interested in holding the fishing pole for like a second and then she wanted someone else to hold it for a while until she remembered how much fun fishing is.

Fishing!

Fishing!

One morning I actually took advantage of the cooler temps, the beautiful view, and some free time to get a run in. I wish I could be running here all.the.time. because it was such a great run. I even managed to get my fastest time in AND almost get hit by a deer. That’s right. I ALMOST GOT HIT BY A DEER WHILE RUNNING. Because nature. It was mildly terrifying and also kind of awesome. Thankfully there were no other encounters with the animals.

Just writing about our trip makes me want to go back. Because this was my morning coffee view. And who wouldn’t want more of this?

Mother’s Day 2015

I love being her Mom

I love being her Mom

Mother’s Day was a little different this year, in the way that life is a little different these days, but it was still a nice day that I got to spend with my Mom and my baby girl.

Three generations.

Three generations.

The woman that gave me life and the little girl that made me a Mama. I couldn’t ask for anything more.

I got to enjoy a relaxing morning with my sweet girl. We enjoyed our coffee together (hers was water) and just generally had a lazy morning. We weren’t in a rush to go anywhere or do anything. It was nice to spend extra time cuddling and just being with her.

Morning coffee.

Unexpectedly, she got me a little gift (with help from Daddy) and she was so excited about my gift that she just had to help me open it. I enjoy opening my own gifts, but I enjoy so much more watching Sydney be so excited about “prizes” (surprises which is what she thinks gifts are) that it is just too cute to not let her open my gifts.

My parents came over to spend a little time with us this year. There was no big to-do and that was really quite nice. We went out to a nice lunch and then we went over to the park where the pond and ducks are that Sydney loves and we walked around the pond and spent time playing outside.

Walking around the pond

Sydney enjoyed very much playing with Nana. It’s funny to watch my mom play with my daughter. Well, not funny I guess but more in the way that when I watch the two of them play together as if no one is watching I know exactly what she looked like playing with me when I was little and exactly what I look like playing with Sydney. I really love playing with Sydney and I really don’t care how silly I look doing it because the sillier I act the more she laughs and that laugh is my favorite sound in the entire world. I’d do anything to get her to laugh.

Playing with Nana.

I can remember a time when I was so afraid of what other people (strangers even) thought of me and what I looked like…. but now? I could not care less. I really love the version of myself when I’m with Sydney. She makes me the best version of myself I could ever hope to be. I love being a Mom but I feel so lucky that I get to be Sydney’s mom. I wouldn’t change her, or my life as her Mom, for anything in this world.

I hope all the Mama’s out there had a wonderful Mother’s Day this year!
